I’m sure you have heard it many times. Every time someone decides to try internet marketing, they are told to start out with affiliate marketing. I am sure I have spoken about it myself on this blog if I remember correctly.

It’s the easiest way to start.” Technically speaking, it is the easiest way to start. Technically, you don’t need to have your own web site. As with anything, there are pros and cons to doing this. Before going into that, let’s make sure that you understand what affiliate marketing is.

Affiliate marketing is simply sending traffic to a product that already exists from a vendor. If you make a sale, you receive a commission. That is a pretty simple concept. The more sales you make, the more commissions you make. It does sound pretty easy instead of what the vendor has to go through to launch a product.

So, what are the pros? Technically, you don’t need a website. Technically, you don’t have to create a product. You also don’t have to recruit affiliates to promote your product because you are the affiliate. You only promote what you want to promote. Sounds pretty sweet doesn’t it? It sounds pretty easy too. There are some cons though and we should look at those as well.

The biggest con is that as a new marketer, you don’t have a track record for vendors to see. That is number of sales and refunds. Conversion rates and refunds are very important to a vendor and for this reason new affiliates will find it tougher to get approval to promote. Some will even resort to trying to promote anything and everything they can get approved for which is a good way to ruin your reputation before you even get one established.

You still need to gather a following. You need to select a niche to operate in and establish yourself as someone to listen to in that niche. This will take time to do. During that time, you need to be building an email list or you won’t have anyone to promote the offers to. To build a list, you need a lead magnet that will get people to give you their name and email address. Your lead magnet needs to be of high quality. It needs to be good enough to sell only, you are giving it away not for money but instead, for a name and email address. So, to build a list, you are creating a product.

Next, you only get paid from the sales you make which comes from the traffic you send. The vendor gets sales from traffic to his product, traffic that is sent by many affiliates. Especially during a product launch, you are competing with many affiliates. Now remember, just because someone is on your list, it doesn’t mean they aren’t on someone else’s list too. In fact, they are probably on many lists. Do you know what those other affiliates are doing to get them to buy through them instead of someone else? They are offering bonuses. In order to truly compete, you need to offer bonuses too. This of course means creating products.

On the subject of offering bonuses, you need to create a bonus page to show your bonuses for that product on. That means you need a web site. You need a landing page to show your lead magnet and form to build your list. You need a bonus page to display your bonuses. So, you are building a website.

The advantages of being a vendor are that you have many affiliates sending traffic to you. You build an email list automatically consisting of everyone that bought your product. This isn’t a list of leads, this is a list of buyers. They will be more likely to listen to you when you tell them to go see a product you are promoting as an affiliate which makes you more commissions. When you apply for an affiliate link, you have stats the vendor can see. They see your stats as a vendor. The number of sales, refunds, and conversion rate are all there. It is easier to get approval to promote an offer.

To sum it all up, even as an affiliate, you are still building a website and creating products. It is harder to get approved to promote when you are new and starting out. What holds many back from selling their own products is that they don’t think they can create products. Let me ask you this, can you take something that is written down and say it differently?
